Notes

8/23/16

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! As you know,

eighth grade is an important time for your child. They are

finishing middle school and preparing themselves for high

school and so much more. I am looking forward to having

your child in my classroom and getting to know each one as

an individual as we all learn together. This year students will

be concentrating on a number of competencies based on the

Common Core Standards. Some of these skills include

vocabulary, grammar, writing, speaking, listening, and

literature. We will also focus on close reading to

comprehend and evaluate increasingly complex text across

genres and disciplines in order to analyze and construct

effective arguments. Students will use conventions of

Standard American English to articulate their knowledge and

opinions through grade-level appropriate oral, written, and

multi-modal demonstrations with attention to ethically

integrating textual evidence. During the first quarter we will

work with Units 1 & 2. Unit 1: Literary Elements: Plot,

Theme, Characterization, & Point Of View will consists

of students reviewing and analyzing the literacy elements,

plot, theme characterization, and point of view used in

different literary genres. Students will cite textual evidence

to support their summary noting how literary elements

function in the narrative. In Unit 2: Informational Text:

Comprehension, Main Idea, & Connections between

Details, students will use context clues and supportive

elements to determine and differentiate between central ideas

and supporting details. Using text-based criteria, students

summarize informative texts with logical and sound

reasoning. To ensure your student is successful in my class,

please make sure all assignments, homework, and projects

are completed on time. Also, make sure they are studying

for exams and quizzes. If you have any questions or

concerns, please contact me at kristy.fernandez@aps.edu; or

(x40579). My goal is to help your student do the best job he

or she can this year, so please feel free to keep in touch.
