Attendance

Attendance Line (505) 898-1492 ext. 40696

Research shows that students with consistent school attendance have improved academic performance.

The staff and administration believe that attendance is a cooperative effort between the parent and the school. When the student is absent for any reason, we ask the parent/guardian to contact the Attendance Office, as soon as possible, at 898-1492, Press 40696. Students leaving school during the day while classes are in session must be signed out in the main office. For safety reasons, parents will be asked for picture identification when signing out their child. Students arriving late to school must sign in when they arrive at school.

Excused and Unexcused Absences

Schools shall comply with the Albuquerque Public Schools Student Behavior Handbook when determining excused and unexcused absences.

Excused Absences

Absences may be excused for the following reasons with proper notification:

  • Illness (including chronic illness documentation on a health plan, IEP or 504 plan)

  • Limited family emergencies
  • Family deaths
  • Medical, health or legal appointments
  • Suspensions
  • Religious commitments
  • College visits
  • Deployment of a military parent
  • Limited extenuating circumstances as approved in advance by the school principal

Your Child On Track in Middle and High School Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job.

What You Can Do

  • Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful, and on track to graduation.
  • Make school attendance a priority
  • Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day, make that the expectation.
  • Help your teen stay engaged
  • Find out if your child feels engaged by his classes and feels safe from bullies and other threats. Make sure he/she is not missing class because of behavioral issues and school discipline policies. If any of these are problems, work with your school.
  • Communicate with the school
  • Know the school’s attendance policy – incentives and penalties.
